Two All-Time Favorites

Ranch Dressing Mix and Onion Soup Mix are two of the most requested homemade blends. Store-bought packages work, but they often include preservatives, anti-caking agents, and other ingredients many of us prefer to avoid. Making your own lets you control the flavor and quality.

Make Your Own Ranch Dressing

To make a quick ranch dressing, stir 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of your homemade Ranch Dressing Mix into 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1/4 cup buttermilk. If you don’t have buttermilk, thin sour cream or yogurt with milk or water to achieve the same consistency.

Make Your Own Onion Dip

For the classic party onion dip, mix 1/2 cup mayonnaise with 1/4 cup sour cream and add your Onion Soup Mix, starting with 1 teaspoon and increasing to taste. Greek or regular yogurt can be substituted for sour cream.

New to Herbs de Provence?

Praised Chicken with Herbs de Provence

Herbs de Provence is a French-style blend that typically includes thyme, oregano, basil, rosemary, tarragon, and sometimes lavender. It’s excellent on chicken—especially when rubbed into the skin—adding a savory, slightly floral note from the tarragon or lavender if included.

What About That House Seasoning?

My personal House Seasoning started as a simple mix and evolved into a favorite I keep by the stove. I include the recipe below so you can make a small batch to try, then scale up and customize it to suit your tastes.

Ideas For Using These Homemade Seasonings

Use these blends to season meats, vegetables, soups, sauces, and dressings. They’re handy sprinkled on roasted vegetables, stirred into stews, or mixed into dips. The video includes additional serving ideas and demonstrations.

Let’s Talk Shelf Life

Properly stored, these seasoning blends remain flavorful for about one year. If a blend seems past its peak, warming it briefly in a dry skillet over low heat can help revive the aroma. Store mixes in airtight containers away from heat and light to preserve freshness.

Extending Shelf Life with a FoodSaver

A handheld jar vacuum system removes oxygen from jars and slows the aging of dried spices. I use a small FoodSaver tool to extend the life of blends stored in jars; it’s an easy way to protect spices from exposure to air.

Stocking the Traditional Foods Pantry

These seasoning blends fit perfectly into a traditional foods pantry. If you make your own cultured butter, sour cream, and mayonnaise, you’ll also have the fresh dairy products that pair beautifully with these mixes—like buttermilk for ranch and sour cream for onion dip.
