Baby rolls coated in a delicious rum glaze, these Rum Rolls are a lovely addition to brunch or breakfast. Soft, tender crumb topped with a flavorful rum glaze — these little rolls are always a crowd-pleaser.

My favorite breakfast: Rum Rolls and coffee.
It’s been a few weeks since I attended an event, and I’m excited to be back for this special occasion.
I picked Rum Rolls today in honor of my mom — they remind me of her more than any other treat.
As a mother myself, I deeply appreciate all my mom did raising me. Even now, in my forties, she’s still guiding and supporting me.
And yes, I still have my hands full raising five teenagers — the work never ends!

These rolls make me think of childhood memories of my mom bringing them home from our favorite bakery. They felt like a special treat.
Sometimes she bought extras and froze them. I remember, as a child, trying to bite into frozen Rum Rolls more than once — yes, mom, I did that.
I may have once claimed an entire package from the bakery as my own. Rum Rolls were likely my favorite food back then.

The bakery still exists and still serves Rum Rolls, though the recipe has changed over time. They’re delicious, but not exactly as I remember.
Because the bakery is far away, I learned to make my own. These rolls aren’t an exact copy of the bakery version, but they’re close — and every time I make them, I think of my mom.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. You do an amazing and challenging job, whether you’re raising one child or five teenagers.
And pet parents count too — pets are family, and caring for them is its own kind of parenting.
(Most importantly to my mom: I love you. Thank you for supporting me even when we don’t always agree, and for helping me see things differently. I love you.)

Recipe for Rum Rolls

Mom’s Rum Rolls
Ingredients
For the Rum Roll Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon dry instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 egg, whisked
- 1 cup warm milk + 2 tablespoons
For the Filling:
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the Rum Glaze:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons milk
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons rum flavoring
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl fitted with a dough hook, combine all dough ingredients.
- Mix for about 20 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Spray the inside of a bowl with cooking spray, place the dough inside, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle.
- Brush the surface with melted butter, then sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Roll the rectangle tightly into a log and cut into 12 equal pinwheels.
- Place each pinwheel into a greased muffin pan.
- Cover the pan and let the rolls rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cover the pan with foil and bake for 15 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake an additional 5–7 minutes, until the rolls are golden on top.
- While the rolls bake, prepare the rum glaze: combine butter, brown sugar and milk in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then remove from heat.
- Stir in powdered sugar and rum flavoring until smooth.
- Brush the glaze over the hot rolls fresh from the oven, reserving some for drizzling.
- After the rolls cool about 10 minutes, drizzle the remaining glaze over them.
- Serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy.
