On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than a cool, lightly flavored drink like an agua fresca. The name literally means “fresh water” and these beverages combine fresh fruit, a touch of sweetener, and plenty of water for a hydrating, thirst-quenching drink.
When I lived in El Paso, aguas frescas were everywhere and I loved sampling the many varieties: strawberry, watermelon, cucumber-lime and more. They’re simple to make at home, and this cucumber cantaloupe agua fresca is one of my favorites. If you enjoy flavored waters, this sweetened cucumber-melon water will be right up your alley.

How to Make This Cucumber Cantaloupe Agua Fresca Recipe
Making an agua fresca is straightforward and quick. You’ll need a blender and a pitcher or a large serving jar to mix and serve. Below are the simple ingredients and steps to prepare this refreshing drink.
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe cantaloupe
- 1 medium cucumber (English cucumber preferred for its thinner skin)
- 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
- 8 cups water
Start by removing the seeds from the cantaloupe and cutting it into chunks, discarding the rind. Peel and slice the cucumber. Any cucumber will work, but English cucumbers have a milder skin.
Place the cantaloupe chunks, cucumber slices, and sugar in the blender and puree until smooth. If the blender struggles to start, add a splash of water to help it along. If your cantaloupe is less sweet, you might prefer a little extra sugar; if it’s very ripe, use less.
Once blended, pour the mixture into your serving pitcher. Optionally, strain the puree through a fine mesh sieve if you prefer a smoother drink, but straining is not required. Add the remaining water, stir to combine, then serve over ice.

This agua fresca also makes a lovely mocktail when garnished. I like to add fresh mint, cucumber ribbons, and melon balls for a pretty presentation. A long toothpick or skewer holds the garnish nicely. A mandoline helps get even cucumber slices and a melon baller is great for scooping attractive melon balls.

When I make a batch, it disappears fast—my family and I kept grabbing glasses throughout the day, and I even took some with me while running errands. The drink is perfect for a picnic or to keep in the fridge for quick, hydrating refills.
