Last week I received an exciting message from Jaden of Steamy Kitchen: I had won a ticket to the Food Blog Forum seminar in Los Angeles. I was thrilled. The event took place at Gallery 1018 in downtown LA and was organized by Jaden (Steamy Kitchen) together with Diane and Todd from White on Rice Couple. It was a full day of expert speakers, practical guidance, and infectious energy that left everyone inspired to improve their food blogs.
I arrived a little late but quickly settled into Matt Armendariz and Adam Pearson’s food photography and styling session. Their work is gorgeous and they explained composition, lighting, and styling techniques in a clear, step-by-step way. I absorbed as much as I could—every tip felt immediately useful.
The next session, led by Todd Porter and Diane Cu of White on Rice Couple, focused on gear and workflow for food photography. Their expertise in lighting, lenses, and post-processing workflow was invaluable. I came away with a clearer understanding of how to shape light and streamline editing for consistent, professional results.
Gary Nicholson presented on building traffic using SEO and social media. As the founder of Relevant Trafik, Gary explained how thoughtful SEO practices and strategic social activity can increase visibility and grow an audience. He covered practical approaches to on-page SEO and guest posting that are helpful for bloggers aiming to rank better in search results.
The final presentation was by Jaden of Steamy Kitchen, on marketing and monetization. Her enthusiasm fills the room—she shared realistic, motivating strategies for growing a brand and turning a blog into a sustainable project. Her practical advice and energy left the audience ready to take action.
The event concluded with a panel Q&A where speakers answered audience questions. It was a great opportunity to connect with fellow bloggers from LA and Orange County, trade ideas, and make new friends in the food blogging community. The sense of camaraderie and shared passion made the day especially memorable.
Speakers for the day

Thank you to Donna from Dishy Goodness for sharing this photo.
On March 6, 2010, I also attended a hands-on photography class with Helene Dujardin of MyTartelette.com at the Academy of Culinary Education in Woodland Hills. Helene’s work is stunning, and the class exceeded my expectations. Participants brought cameras, baked goods, and styling props. Helene provided individualized feedback and practical direction to help each of us capture a beautiful image. It was a productive, inspiring day.
Thanks again to Donna for letting me use this photo.
Helene guided us naturally through camera settings and composition. I spent part of the day comparing notes with fellow attendees, including Rachel from lafujimama and Gaby from whatsgabycooking, which made the experience even more valuable.
My chocolate cookies were styled with help from Helene, and Cathy’s show-food limes were staged for their shoot—both turned out beautifully.
Huge thanks to Gaby, Jen, and Rachel for organizing this wonderful class. I loved every minute of it.
